About the lodge and park

Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park combines a historic family summer residence with public grounds on the Comox waterfront. Robert Filberg commissioned master builder William Haggarty to build the lodge in 1929; construction took six years.

The Arts and Crafts-style house has five bedrooms, five fireplaces and four bathrooms. The Town of Comox purchased the property in 1978, and the site received municipal heritage designation on April 18, 1979. The Town owns the park, which is operated by the non-profit Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association.

The address is 61 Filberg Road. Its setting above Comox Harbour gives the grounds both landscaped garden areas and open waterfront views.

When are the grounds and lodge open?

When are the grounds and lodge open?

The park grounds are open daily from dawn until dusk, with free admission; lodge tours follow a separate seasonal schedule. Gate access and washroom hours also vary by time of day.

Regular lodge tours run on Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays from Easter weekend through Thanksgiving weekend, between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The tour page does not state an admission price. Groups, clubs and organizations can arrange private tours by contacting the Lodge Administrator by email or calling 250-339-2715.

The listed driveway and secondary gates off Filberg Road are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. After that, use the pedestrian gate off Comox Avenue. Upper washrooms are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; later in the day, lower washrooms by the beachfront and Cutting Garden remain available.

Before setting out, check the official Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association site before you go for current access and tour details.

What can you see in the gardens and along the waterfront?

What can you see in the gardens and along the waterfront?

Filberg Park’s year-round grounds include rare and exotic trees, a stream, flowerbeds, paths and open meadows. A six-section self-guided walk, “The Trees of Filberg, A Self-Guided Walk,” gives you a way to explore the grounds at your own pace.

The Herb Garden sits above the Filberg Summer Kitchen. Below it, beside the ocean, the Liz Stubbs Cutting Garden adds another garden stop along the waterfront. Bouquets from the Cutting Garden may be available from April or May through September, depending on growing conditions.

Dogs are not allowed in Filberg Park. Keep that restriction in mind when planning your visit.

Seasonal events and visit planning

Seasonal events and visit planning

The Filberg Festival is an annual event held on the August long weekend, and the park grounds close for the week before and the week after the festival. Plan a separate visit if your priority is seeing the gardens outside the event period, and check the association’s site for the applicable closure information.

A Comox outing can also include market time; the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market guide covers that separate stop.

For a quieter grounds visit, choose a time outside the festival closure and allow room to follow the self-guided tree walk as well as explore the garden areas. If you are planning a lodge tour, match your visit to the regular tour days and seasonal schedule described above.
